An issue with digital ad formats templates is the Paradox of the Active User. No one wants to read the instructions!

The design process

One ad format that had the most issues was the GumGum Velocity format as it was complex to communicate both the functionality and specifications and our initial templates were too abstract and confusing.

I decided to redo the Velocity template to make it clear where it would appear within the ad format, a diagram to show how the format worked and include clearly defined safe areas of where the key artwork needed to be.

A different template issue also occurred at BigAds where the templates required to do two tasks of advising ad specifications and also fitting within a proposal deck.

I came up with a solution where the template was 100% accurate to the specs but it could also auto resize to fit in Google Slides.

Both these projects gave me important UX insights of end user goals and cognitive load. And client artwork was regularly supplied to spec after both templates had been redesigned leading to efficiency and improved creative lead timelines.
